Making Of

The Story

When Jack arrives at his late daughter’s apartment, he collapses on the couch after the long flight. RING! He wakes the next morning to his daughter’s voice on her answering machine. Her friend Daniel calls to say they will come by shortly to help pack up her home. Jack rubs the sleep out of his eyes and takes a good look around the living room. Gay Pride poster. Abstract female nude paintings. Lesbian News on the coffee table. There it is, spelled out in black and white. Jack’s daughter was gay.

Jack springs into action. By the time her friends arrive, Jack has “cleaned his daughter’s living room.” No gayness in sight. After a couple of awkward moments, Jack runs off the friends. But his daughter’s ex gets the final word: “You can change the room. You can’t change who she was.”

Jack paces, pissed. He calls his wife for a distraction. But she’s no help. She wants every remnant of their daughter’s life. But Jack knows better.

Then Jack discovers Nancy, in the middle of a panic attack. His daughter had befriended Nancy, a newly out lesbian, who was struggling through coming out. Jack gets a second chance. Will he take it?

How We Did It

We filmed OUT OF STEP with the generous help of friends and strangers. Friends contributed their tax refunds to our budget. Then we received checks from people we had never met before, who heard about this film from their friends. Others donated their time working on set. Some did both. What they all had in common is they believed in the story we're telling: that love means accepting your family no matter what.
We are still looking for contributions to cover our post production costs and film festival expenses. If you would like to contribute, please send a check for any amount to Blonde Rice Productions, 14254 Oxnard Street, Van Nuys, CA 91401
